Joel Embiid
The world spotlight has a way of finding greatness, no matter where it is. As a child growing up in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Joel Embiid decided to switch to basketball after previously thinking he’d dominate the world of European volleyball. It wasn’t long before he caught the caught the eye of his countryman, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, at his basketball camp. At the age of 16, and with Mbah a Moute as his mentor, he moved to the USA and prepared to make his mark on the basketball world. Despite having difficulties adjusting to life in America, and having to learn English, Joel soon started making a name for himself in basketball circles. After leading his high school team to a state championship, he attended the University of Kansas for a year, where he collected a number of awards, including All-Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honours, and then made the leap to the league.
Joel says that he’s been driven by a singular focus to “be somebody”, and that fire has made itself evident in his young career, with Joel already making it to the All-Rookie First Team, the All-NBA Second Team and the Eastern Conference All-Star roster.
“The Process” has been a gamer for most of his life, cutting his teeth on the PlayStation. Early on, he couldn’t play as much as he wanted, as his mum would take away console privileges if his grades were below her standards. However, now that he’s in the league, Joel takes advantage of his downtime between practices and NBA games by getting his gaming on.
Joel uses HyperX headsets because he likes to put opponents in their place. When he's letting you know about the beatdown he’s dishing out, Joel knows that HyperX headsets make sure he’s coming through crystal clear. If you’re going up against Joel, make sure you bring your A-game, because he’s bringing his, and you’re definitely going to hear about it.
